Critical Essay on The Secret by Rhonda …

Boys and Reading: Is There Any Hope? At an American Library Association conference in the secret essay, 2007, HarperCollins dressed five of its male young adult authors in blue baseball jerseys with our names on the back and case studies sent us up to bat in a panel entitled “In the Clubhouse.” We were meant to demystify to the overwhelmingly female audience the testosterone code that would get teenage boys reading. Whereas boys used to essay, lag behind girls in conclusion, reading in the secret essay, the early grades, statistics show, they soon caught up. Not anymore. Black Driving Term! We guys had mixed feelings about the game plan: boys’ aversion to reading, let alone to novels, has been worsening for the secret essay years. But while this certainly posed a problem for us male writers, we felt that we were being treated as a sideshow. And so we turned from men into boys. Though we ranged in age and style from then 30-something Kenneth Oppel, a writer of fantasies about ancient beasts (“Darkwing”), to Walter Dean Myers, the envelope for resume 70-something master of street novels (“Monster”), along with Chris Crutcher (“Whale Talk”) and Terry Trueman (“Stuck in Neutral”), we easily slipped into the secret essay a cohesive pack.

We became stereotypes, smart-aleck teammates — and we were very much on the defensive. It was Us vs. Them. This is exactly what boys do, in the classroom and in the library, as well as in the clubhouse. If we’re to counter this tendency and encourage reading among boys who may collectively resist it, boys need to be approached individually with books about their fears, choices, possibilities and relationships — the kind of reading that will prick their dormant empathy, involve them with fictional characters and lead them into deeper engagement with their own lives. This is what turns boys into resume cv guide readers. Given the rich variety in young adult fiction available today, this might seem easy. Not so. “We’re in a kind of golden age of books for the secret teenagers — in 3 types 5 paragraph, fact, the best ones are more satisfying reads than most of the best books published for adults,” said Donald Gallo, a Y.A. anthologist and retired English professor at essay, Central Connecticut State University, when I spoke to for resume, him by phone. “The important question is why aren’t boys reading the good books being published?” He ticked off the standard answers: Boys gravitate toward nonfiction. Schools favor classics over contemporary fiction to satisfy testing standards and avoid challenges from parents. And teachers don’t always know what’s out there for boys.

All true, in my opinion. There are other theories. On his Web site,, the teacher and author Jon Scieszka writes that boys “don’t feel comfortable exploring the emotions and feelings found in fiction. . . . Boys don’t have enough positive male role models for literacy. Because the essay majority of adults involved in kids’ reading are women, boys might not see reading as a masculine activity.” But I think it’s also about the books being published. Michael Cart, a past president of the example essay Young Adult Library Services Association, agrees. “We need more good works of realistic fiction, nonfiction, graphic novels, on- or offline, that invite boys to reflect on what kinds of men they want to become,” he told me. “In a commercially driven publishing environment, the the secret essay emphasis is currently on young women.” And then some. At the 2007 A.L.A. conference, a Harper executive said at least three-quarters of example of persuasive conclusion paragraph her target audience were girls, and the secret essay they wanted to read about mean girls, gossip girls, frenemies and vampires. Naturally, authors are writing for this ready group. The current surge in children’s literature has been fueled by talented young female novelists fresh from M.F.A. programs who in earlier times would have been writing midlist adult fiction. Their novels are bought by female editors, stocked by female librarians and taught by female teachers. Essays! It’s a cliche but mostly true that while teenage girls will read books about boys, teenage boys will rarely read books with predominately female characters.

Children’s literature didn’t always bear this overwhelmingly female imprint. Like most readers growing up in the 1940s and ’50s, before the advent of the Y.A. genre, I went directly from children’s books about explorers to the secret, Steinbeck and fight Hemingway. But my son, Sam, a novelist who grew up in the ’70s, was able to go from “Goodnight Moon” to the burgeoning category of Y.A. The Secret! literature. The books that Sam read differed from the current crop in one significant way: They tended not to be gender-specific. Many early Y.A. writers were women who wrote well about both genders, like the queen of coming-of-age lit, Judy Blume (“Forever”). Others wrote under the guise of asexual initials: S. Resume Cv Guide! E. Hinton (The Outsiders) and M. E. Kerr (“Gentlehands”). The better male writers also wrote about both boys and girls: John Donovan (“I’ll Get There. It Better Be Worth the Trip”), Paul Zindel (“The Pigman”) and Robert Cormier, my hero in the field and the secret author of the 1974 classic, “The Chocolate War.” To me, that book exemplifies what’s currently missing: here was a tale of international resolution fascistic adults and teenage bullying at a Catholic boys high school, and, controversially and crucially, it lacked a redemptive resolution, one of Cormier’s trademarks. The best-selling authors James Patterson and essay Rick Riordan talk about the challenge of encouraging children, particularly boys, to love reading. By Rob Harris on example conclusion paragraph Publish Date August 19, 2011. by Suzanne DeChillo/The New York Times|David Hunsinger for The New York Times|Lincoln Center Footage Courtesy Little, Brown Books. Watch in the secret, Times Video » But the next spate of Y.A. fiction tended to be simplistic problem novels that read like after-school specials, and soon split along gender lines.

Books with story lines about disease, divorce, death and dysfunction sold better for girls than did similar books for boys. The shift seemed to fundamentally alter the Y.A. landscape. To me and for resume I think to the secret, many prospective readers, today’s books for boys — supernatural space-and-sword epics that read like video game manuals and sports novels with preachy moral messages — often seem like cynical appeals to the lowest common denominator. Boys prefer video games and ESPN to book versions of them. These knockoffs also lack the tough, edgy story lines that allow boys a private place to reflect on the inner fears of failure and humiliation they try so hard to fight marxism, brush over. Editors who ask writers of books for essay boys to include girl characters — for commercial reasons — further blunt the edges. The argument over boys’ reading is not just about gender. This is business, not prejudice. Why publish books if they never reach prospective readers? That many of the edgy books boys would like to read are either not taught or are banned does nothing to promote the of persuasive cause.

This is why I felt compelled to describe, at the 2007 A.L.A. conference, my interactions with readers of driving my 2006 novel “Raiders Night,” a book frequently banned by male principals and superintendents (many of them former coaches) for essay its depiction of the drug and for resume hazing underside of high school football. But the boys who read it are quick to relate to the secret essay, its touchy subject matter. At one school I visited in suburban Chicago, a female teacher, working with a female librarian, had been slipping “Raiders Night” to international resolution, dozens of the secret essay boys, mostly athletes. These “reluctant” readers were eager to talk to me about resume cv guide, their reading experiences. They talked about not trusting coaches who, they said, send you in hurt, and lie about your playing time and play you off against your friends. They felt trapped — they loved the the secret fellowship, the physical contact, the prestige of the game. They even talked, gingerly, about playing because Dad wants you to and how you could be kept in racial while, line by the fear of being called a girl or gay.

This was hard-core boy talk, but it was also book talk — the essay fictional characters we were discussing allowed us the freedom to express feelings the way girls do. Would this conversation ever have taken place without a literary impetus? A number of boys thought the resume cv guide book’s ending, in which the the secret hero makes what I considered the example of persuasive moral choice of protecting the weak and not the team, was “messed up.” A real jock, they told me, does whatever he needs to do to win, and right or wrong has nothing to do with it. I told them I had a reading list for them. The Secret Essay! Robert Lipsyte received the 2001 Margaret A. International Resolution Case Studies! oral presentations [by Jeff Radel, University of Kansas Medical Center] Before preparing the presentation determine: 1. The type of talk you will be expected to give. Will this be an informal discussion, a seminar, or a more formal presentation? Different talks have different purposes; the intent of a conference presentation is not the the secret essay same as a presentation at a job interview. When in essay conclusion doubt, ask for guidance from your host.

2. The Secret Essay? The composition of the audience . Will you be speaking to a general audience or specialists? How many people will attend? 3. The time allotted for the talk . The longer the talk, the more freedom you will have to explore the resume cv guide topic. A short talk needs to be clear and essay concise. 4. Expectations concerning content. Is there a specific purpose for having you give a talk? Clarify expectations and address them during the presentation.

Will you be presenting novel concepts to this audience, or building upon their prior knowledge? Either way, make sure you cover the black paper profiling racial term basics clearly, and early in the talk, to avoid losing the audience. Once you have a general idea of what you want to say, you'll have to decide how to say it. It is essential that your talk be well-organized and that your points be presented logically and unambiguously. To do so may require much preparation. Start early! Here are a few pointers: 1. Start preparing well in essay advance by thinking through what needs to be said. 2. Develop a clear statement of the topic and its importance.

3. Arrange material in club marxism essays a logical sequence (IMRAD) . 4. Presentation software (such as PowerPoint) is, of course, widely used for oral presentations. Power Point Problems. Life After Death by Powerpoint. 5. Determine transition elements which will help your audience to follow the link from one topic to the next. These should be logical, and may be presented by posing a question, or explaining your own discovery of the link's existence. 6. Run through the talk once, early.

Go back and re-think the sequencing. Discard non-essential elements. 7. Attempt to identify problems or questions the audience may have and address them in the talk , before the audience has a chance to think of these things themselves. 8. Proof-read your slides! Do so while there is plenty of black paper profiling racial term time to re-print any visual aids with errors. 9. The most important preparation factor is to REHEARSE!

You may want to videotape yourself and watch the results with a critical eye. 10. Try the presentation in front of a few colleagues. Ask for feedback, then act on that information. Depending on the secret essay the audience expected for your presentation, you might want to select those who know a little about your topic, and not those who know a lot. Paper Profiling? This will focus your attention on attempting to explain why you did what you did in simple terms, rather than encouraging attention to details only specialists care about. 11. The Secret? If you start preparing early, you'll have plenty of time to refine the presentation based on your colleagues' feedback. Keeping these elements in mind as you prepare and practice the club marxism essays presentation will reduce the the secret essay amount of resume cv guide re-working you'll have to do as it evolves, and will result in a streamlined, effective end product. 1. Rate: The optimal rate for a scientific talk is the secret about 100 words per minute. Any faster and 3 types 5 paragraph essays the audience can't absorb the the secret additional information.

Use pauses and repeat critical information. 2. Opening: The opening should catch the interest and attention of the audience immediately, while avoiding trite filler phrases (Thank you for having me . . .) and technical jargon. 3. Transitions: The link between successive elements of the resume cv guide talk should be planned carefully. You should make the relation between successive elements clear to the audience. 4. Conclusion: Summarize the main concepts you've discussed, and how your work relates to issues you've raised.

Signal that the summary is beginning (In summary, . ), but don't begin the summary too soon or else the audience will start to leave before you finish! 5. Length: Don't run over! Ever! Shorten your talk by removing details, concepts, and information, not by eliminating words. The Secret? If it becomes absolutely essential to supply details, supplement your presentation with a handout. Make about 10% more handouts than you think you'll need. Always leave time for a few questions at the end of the talk. Practice makes perfect. Practice is the most important factor in making a good presentation. No matter how busy you are, make time for at of persuasive essay paragraph least a few practice runs.

The effects of practice will be apparent, and a poorly presented talk reflects upon both you and your attitude towards the material and audience. Practice the the secret talk a few times to see how it flows. After that, seek outside feedback to make sure you are on 5 paragraph essays the right track. Finally, practice all parts of the talk equally. If you always start at the beginning and work until you run into problems, the beginning of the talk will be great, but the final part of the talk may suffer. Hints for essay efficient practice. Breath slowly and deeply; project your voice. Practice making eye contact with your imaginary audience, but don't single out one individual. Avoid looking at your notes when you don't need to. Your words will probably be different each time you practice, but try to stick to the general outline of black driving profiling term while your notes. Don't attempt to memorize your text; use your notes only as reference points to keep you on track.

Think about the ideas, and your words will follow naturally. Speak slowly and clearly, and use gestures. A tape recorder or videotape are useful tools. Look for the secret essay variation in speed or tone, or for distracting fillers like 'um's (and 'er's, 'like's and 'you know's). Avoid distracting mannerisms, e.g., don't pace or adjust your clothing. Case? Make sure you are speaking to your audience , not to the floor, ceiling, or, especially, the projection screen. What you say should be readily understandable by the audience. Pay attention to diction; speak clearly and distinctly. Listen carefully to the words you use, not to what you think you are saying.

Are these the best words for making your point? Are they unambiguous? Avoid using jargon whenever possible. A prepared series of notes can be useful. Keep in mind that notes may not even be needed for the final talk. Begin by essay determining the envelope underlying message of the the secret essay talk, then decide on the minimum essential material needed to support that message. Write out the talk and practice it once or twice. If needed, reorganize the material, rephrase statements, and highlight key phrases.

There are a few things you can do at the last minute to ensure a successful presentation: 1. If possible, check out the room you'll use for the presentation. If you need specialized equipment, make sure it is available. Determine who will be controlling equipment for you. If the room is large (or your voice small), use a microphone. Try it out before the audience arrives. If using a laser pointer, make sure it works. 2. Don't wait until the very last minute to make that run to the bathroom, and remember to check your appearance. So you are sitting there, about to be introduced.

Now what? 1. Fight Essays? Take several deep breaths as you are being introduced. Visualize your rehearsed opening statement; don't improvise at the last moment. 2. State your objectives at start of your talk, then restate them again at the end of the talk. In between, discuss how your material relates to these objectives.

3. Choose a natural, moderate rate of the secret essay speech and use automatic gestures. Don't speak in a monotone voice. Vary pitch and volume as appropriate. 4. Monitor your behavior, and avoid habitual behaviors (e.g., pacing). 5. International Conflict? Laser pointers are wonderful pointing devices, but remember not to the secret essay, point them at the audience. They are best used by flashing the pointer on resume cv guide and off, so that the place you are indicating is illuminated briefly. Don't swirl the laser around and around one place on the projection screen, or sweep it from place to place across the screen.

This may be distracting for the audience, and they will end up watching the essay pointer and not listening to what you are saying. 6. Enthusiasm for your topic is contagious, but don't overdo it. 7. If appropriate, converse with your audience. Involve them in the process of the paragraph presentation by posing questions and making eye contact. 8. Keep an eye on your time, and don't run over your limit. Ever. 9. The Secret Essay? Be prepared for interruptions (e.g., late arrivals). 10. If you must turn down the room lights, don't turn them off entirely. 11. Don't apologize for any aspect of fight essays your presentation.

This should be your very best effort; if you have to apologize, you haven't done your job properly. 12. Never turn your back on an audience. Always maintain eye contact with your audience. 13. Strive to have a prepared and memorable summary. The ‘take home message’ is what the audience will remember after you leave. 14. Give others credit where due.

This can be done early in the talk or later in the talk. If planned for later in the talk, don't forget to acknowledge these people's efforts (even if you have to skip a statement or two to remain on time). The question period often is the part of the talk which influences the audience the most. The Secret Essay? After all, you've had time to for resume, practice the rest of the talk. This is the part of the essay presentation where your ability to interact with the audience will be evaluated. Since you can't always predict the what you'll be asked, how can you prepare for the questioning? Here are a few guidelines: 1. In large rooms, you may want to repeat each question so the entire audience knows what you've been asked. 2. Before you answer, take a moment to reflect on the question. Example Of Persuasive Conclusion Paragraph? By not rushing to give an answer, you show a degree of respect for essay the questioner, and you give yourself time to be sure you are answering the question that actually was asked.

If you are unsure, restate the driving paper racial term while question or ask for a clarification. 3. The Secret Essay? Above all, wait for the questioner to finish asking the question before you begin your answer! The only exception is when it becomes necessary to break in on studies a vague, rambling question; this is your show, and the secret essay you have only a limited time to make your presentation. It is resume cv guide essential, however, that you break in tactfully. Say something like So, are you asking . This will focus the question and give you a place to begin an the secret, answer. Remember that your ability to interact with an audience also is being evaluated. 4. If a question is studies asked during the the secret talk, and international conflict studies it will clarify an ambiguity, answer it immediately.

5. If you can't answer a question, just say so. Don't apologize. You may offer to the secret essay, research an answer, then get back to resume cv guide, the questioner later, suggest resources which would help the questioner to address the question themselves, or ask for suggestions from the audience. Be sure that the title will be interpreted by the audience the way you intend it to be, and check for spelling errors! One of the early visuals is the secret often used to resume cv guide, break the ice, warming the audience up and getting you over the jitters (but if that's not your style, don't bother - nothing is more awkward that watching someone tell a joke when they don't possess that talent). Using an icebreaker is fine, but don't overuse cartoons. You'll want to avoid appearing shallow or superficial. Screen the contents and implications of each cartoon carefully, too.

Another common use of a visual is to the secret essay, introduce or acknowledge collaborators. Consider placing this near the 3 types 5 paragraph beginning of the talk. That way it will only take a few seconds early on when you feel there is the secret essay plenty of time - and it won't get lost at the end of the talk when you may feel constrained for time. Collaborators can be listed by name and affiliation, but a more effective way to acknowledge these folks is a collage of marxism essays candid photos with names attached. Essay? If one or more of the collaborators is in the audience, this can be great fun, and can serve as an icebreaker (thereby eliminating one more slide - the cartoon). A Word About Timing. Keep the following points in mind as you sit down to begin to create your visuals: Plan on spending at least 45- 60 seconds to explain each slide. Do the 5 paragraph math - that's 10 - 13 slides or so for a 10 minute talk! Most presenters use too many slides. By using only essential slides, you'll increase the time that you are the focus of your audience's attention during the talk (i.e., they'll actually listen to what you're saying instead of reading your slides!). Four Important Design Concepts.

Pay attention to the secret, these four concepts as you create slides: 2) Keep it Simple. 3) Make it Clear. 4) Be Consistent. Naturally, you'd like everyone in the audience to be able to actually see the visual you plan to use. This is example of persuasive complicated by not always knowing the size of the audience you'll speak to, or the size of the room you'll use. As a rule of the secret thumb, if it looks right on the computer screen, it's probably too small.

If it looks big, it's still too small. Here’s a hint for those using some type of graphics software. Simply expand the black profiling racial visual until it takes up the the secret full screen. Then move back until you are about 6 feet away from the screen. Anything you can see or read easily should be about the international case studies right size. And, what about the secret essay when you actually get the international conflict slides back from the developer? Ideally, of course, you'd like to try the slides in the secret essay a large lecture hall. Driving Paper While? However, you can also try this: once you have the slides in your hands, simply grab one by the corner and hold it at arm's length. Squint a bit, and try to see what it says. The Secret? Even better, shuffle the slides first, then try this out - if you can sort the slides according to your presentation outline then you are doing well for resume cv guide both sizing and organization.

Be critical of your work, since you can count on having at least one critic in any audience. Be certain that the visuals you plan to use actually illustrate the concepts you plan to essay, present and discuss. Slides should introduce the essential elements of concepts you'll discuss. The audience ought be able to get the point of the visual within the first 4 or 5 seconds after it appears. If you must use text, use it sparingly. Spend more time explaining the slides instead of assuming that the text will explain it for you.

As a rule: 1. Use no more than 6 lines of text per slide. 2. Use no more than 7 words per line of 5 paragraph essays text. 3. Avoid using a number of text slides in a row during the the secret essay presentation. After a slide first appears, don't say anything for a few seconds - allow the audience to black driving profiling racial while, absorb the information. Then, when you have their undivided attention, expand upon what the slide has to say. For this approach to be effective, you'll have to include only the the secret most pertinent information in each visual. You should limit the example essay conclusion paragraph text on each slide and the secret essay restrict the contents of for resume tables or graphs to include only the information most pertinent to your topic. Although presenting data in tables can be effective, limit the data you do present to that which is pertinent to the topic at the secret essay hand and, remember, a graph often is more effective.

If you present means, include estimates of variablility. Be prepared to fight, discuss the statistical assessment of your data and the implications. If the information in the visual isn't easy to see or read, the essay audience will be trying to figure it out instead of listening to what you have to say. That's the fight marxism first step towards loosing the attention of an the secret essay, audience or confusing them. Consider carefully as you choose a font for the text, you'll find that the larger the text, the easier it is to see from the back of the room. 5 Paragraph Essays? On the essay other hand, you'll be able to fit less text on international case studies each visual (that isn't necessarily a bad thing). The Secret? We tend to see most fonts printed in a 10 - 12 point size, in textbooks and on computer screens. Fight Essays? Larger text looks strange, and we tend to overestimate how big text sizes larger than 18 point will actually be when projected onto a screen. If the text looks big enough to be the the secret essay right size (18-24 point), it's probably too small. Make the fight club marxism text so large that you feel it must be too big (36-48 point) - it will probably be just about right. Also, a mixture of upper and lower case characters is easiest to read.

DONT USE ALL CAPS. Color increases visual impact dramatically , and one of the most effective uses of color is to emphasize selected text. The Secret? Select complementary colors to increase visibility, and envelope for resume avoid color clashes! Many folks experience some degree of color insensitivity (the most common form is a reduced sensitivity to reds and greens, in about 1 out of the secret essay 10 males). If you use reds and international greens, choose highly saturated colors instead of pastels, and use thicker lines (for instance, when showing different sets of the secret data on a graph). Your goal in all presentations is to educate and inform your audience. Make sure your presentation follows a logical sequence.

Use transitions to marxism, help the audience understand how successive stages are related to each other, and to the big picture. One effective strategy is to begin and the secret essay end the presentation with an identical pair of resume cv guide visuals that summarize the main points you hope to convey to the audience. At the the secret beginning, this summary gives the audience a notion of what to expect, and an idea of your logical outline. It also helps to break through the resume cv guide last minute jitters, and the secret essay reminds you of the concepts you'll present. Don't deviate from your plan! At the end of the example of persuasive conclusion paragraph presentation, the summary provides a way to recapitulate the main points you've made.

It provides the audience with the sense that you've come full circle, completing the essay story you had promised to tell. 3 Types? It also allows you to be sure you've covered all the points you'd planned to essay, cover! You should also be consistent in the use of formats. International Resolution Case Studies? Don't switch formats! Once you've selected a general 'look' of the presentation by deciding on the color scheme, fonts, and so on, stick to it! Change distracts an audience; your audience will pay more attention to a change in background color than to what you will be saying. 1) Begin preparing your visuals early: Allow enough time to make any necessary changes. Project the slides to the secret essay, verify content, spelling, sizes, and colors.

Take the time to reconsider the presentation as a whole. 2) Make back-up copies of your presentation. 3) Practice the presentation. A lot. How to Give a Bad Talk. David A. Patterson. Essay on the Importance of Library. The library occupies a very important place in school. Essay! With its books suited to the interests and aptitude of students of different age group, with its magazines, periodicals, news papers and with its calm and tranquil atmosphere it has a special call to resume cv guide, the students who go there and quench their thirst for reading the material which cannot be provided to the secret, them in the class room. Here they find an environment which is conductive to the building up of habit of self learning. The library is the center of the intellectual and social activities of school. The library has got very wholesome effect over the work of school. Habit of reading can be cultivated, when students get practice in international conflict case, reading and reading habit in the beginning are made firm when students get that material to the secret, read which interests them and occupies their attention. In the class room the books that are prescribed may not serve the purpose, some students may not be in a position to purchase all books that they want to read, while others may not find books that are of interest to them.

Interests differ, aptitudes vary, individual capacities present a wide variation in students’ reading capacities. In the library each has what he wants, each goes at the speed to which his capabilities allow him to go. The library is thus, a common platform upon which all students meet on 5 paragraph essays a common level with equal opportunities. It is the nucleus of the school environment, the center of the intellectual activities of the school. The library may be regarded as an essential instrument for putting progressive methods into practice. But it is most unfortunate that in a large number of schools there are at present no libraries worth the name. The books are usually old, out-dated, unsuitable, usually selected without reference to the students’ tastes and interests.

They are stocked in a few book shelves, which are housed in an inadequate and unattractive room. The person in charge of the library is often a clerk or an indifferent teacher, who does the work on a part-time basis and has neither love for books nor knowledge of library technique. What makes this situation particularly difficult is the the secret essay fact that most teachers and 3 types headmasters and even the the secret essay educational administrators and authorities do not realize how unsatisfactory this position is and, therefore, hey have no sense to take necessary steps for improving the condition. The library must be made the most attractive place in the school so that students will be naturally drawn to it. It should be housed in a spacious well lighted hall. The book shelves, tables, chairs, reading desks should be carefully designed with an 3 types essays, eye to artistic effect as well as functional efficiency. As far as possible the open shelf system should be introduced so that students may have free access to books. The success of library depends largely on the proper selection of books, journals and essay periodicals. There should be a small committee of teachers, for selecting the books for the library.

The guiding principles in selection should be, not the 3 types teacher’s own idea of what books the students must read but their natural and psychological interests. The Commission recommended that trained librarians who have a love for books and understanding of student’s interests should be provided in all secondary schools and all teachers should be given some training in the basic principles of library work in the training colleges as well as through refresher courses. As the the secret proper use of well equipped school library is envelope for resume absolutely essential for the secret essay, the official working of every educational institution and for encouraging literary and cultural interests in driving profiling racial term while, students, every secondary school should have such a library. The Secret! Class libraries and subject libraries should also be utilized for the purpose. The subject teachers should be in charge of subject library. Competent subject teachers can enrich their teaching greatly with the help of small collections of books in their own subjects. This should not be confined to fight club marxism, text books only. Advance works, reference books, books on related subjects and allied field, all these will find a place in that collection.

Most of the the secret teachers in fact, have no idea of what a majority of students are reading or whether they are reading at all. So the Commission recommended that a systematic register should be maintained and each student must be allotted a few pages of the register in which all books studied by fight club marxism essays, him are entered date-wise. This procedure will be very much helpful to the class teachers and the secret essay headmasters to give necessary advice and encouragement to individual student for developing their reading habit. On the other hand each student is expected to maintain a diary in which he may enter date-wise, the names of all the books (with the names of the Authors) which he has read together with brief quotation or extracts that may appeal to him. The Commission further suggested that where there are no separate public libraries, the school libraries should, so far as possible make their facilities available to the local public and all public libraries should have a special section for resume cv guide, children and adolescents. (i) It supplements class work by increasing students’ vocabulary, quickening their intelligence and extending their general knowledge; (ii) It enables the students to prepare themselves for taking part in the various co-curricular activities of the school. They get information which is the secret essay very helpful to black racial term while, them in taking part in debates, giving lectures and writing for the school magazine; (iii) It develops habits of the essay students to derive pleasure and information from recreational and informative books; (iv) It broadens their outlook by placing a vast sphere of information before them; (v) It imparts training to driving profiling racial term, the students for the proper use of essay, books; (vi) It gives students training in punctuality by impressing ‘ upon them the necessity of returning and borrowing books at a fixed time; (vii) It provides suitable books to the students to satisfy their hunger of reading books and saves them from the harmful effects of reading unsuitable and injurious literature; (viii) It inculcates in the students the habit of fight marxism, silent reading ; (ix) It provides an opportunity to make the best use of leisure time thereby lessening the chance of indiscipline in the school. In the history of Indian Education the importance of Secondary Education Commission is the secret of great significance. Prior to this, various Commissions and club marxism essays Committees recommended for the improvement of secondary education, but adequate steps were not taken at different levels for its practical application. The present system of secondary education was introduced by the secret essay, the British authority. But within the example essay conclusion hundred years of its existence there was no remarkable improvement in the field of secondary education.

When everybody was feeling intensely for a progressive and workable change at this level, the Secondary Education Commission submitted its report with constructive suggestions. The Commission attempted to investigate all the fundamental problem pertaining to secondary education and recommended certain concrete measures for eradicating the evils that stood as stumbling block on the path of the progress of education. It probed deep into each and every aspect of the secondary education and essay made more practical and resume cv guide sound recommendations than those made by other Commissions appointed in the past. The government took initiative to implement some of the recommendation only because those were befitting to essay, the time and made in 3 types 5 paragraph, the light of the recommendations of other Commissions and Committees. The Commission has put forth sincere efforts to rectify those defects persisted in secondary education i.e. predominance of bookish and literary knowledge, lack of vocational and technical-education, defective system of examination, shortcomings inherent in the managing bodies and organisation of schools etc. Realizing the futility of single track institutions the Commission gave entirely original suggestion for the establishment of the secret essay, ‘Multipurpose Schools” catering to the needs of the various ability, aptitude and interest of the students. One of the of persuasive essay conclusion most vital problems that confronting the country at essay present is the development of agriculture and envelope for resume industry. Inclusion of these subjects in the secret essay, the curriculum of the secondary education and emphasis of education in them is a notable feature of the Commission. For improving the progressively deteriorating conditions regarding discipline, reorganization of administration and management of school at this level, the commission gave certain practical suggestions.

It also made proposals for bringing about a greater diversity and comprehensiveness in educational courses which would include both general and vocational subjects. Besides, other suggestions for reforming examination and fight club marxism essays evaluation system, diversified of studies, improvement of essay, teachers’ lot, reform of private management etc. are merely repetition and lack the spirit of departure from the beaten track. Different Commissions and paper Committees appointed earlier also highlighted some of these things. As government was not so very keen in eradicating the essay fundamental defects in envelope for resume, the sphere of secondary education, root and branch, the tangible result could not be arrived at. In-spite of the merits and significance of these recommendations there are certain limitations and shortcomings which should not be lost sight off.

As a matter of fact the Commission has endeavoured to mould the essay pre-existing pattern of secondary education by suggesting improvements and changes which are not very sound and black racial term effective. Moreover, insufficient attention has been paid for the improvement of female education and suggestion for teachers training is merely conventional. Its suggestion for financial resources and government responsibilities Sin this regard are most inadequate. In-spite of the above shortcomings and limitations it can be said that the the secret essay recommendations of the Secondary Education Commission opened a new era of international resolution case, reconstruction and reform of education at the secondary stage. These recommendations have got far reaching consequences and are likely to go a long way if faithfully implemented keeping in view to strengthen the the secret weakest link in conflict resolution studies, the system of the secret, education of the country.

Steps were taken during 2nd plan to implement pattern of reorganization of secondary education as recommended by S.E.C.” Accordingly financial allocation was made in the budget. Government took effective measures during 2nd plan period to introduce crafts and diversified courses, better facilities for science teaching, establishment of multipurpose schools and junior technical schools as well as upgrading of the high schools to higher secondary schools. In the 1st plan about 250 multipurpose seconds were established. About 1150 high schools were converted into higher secondary schools by the end of the 2nd plan. As a result of the government’s effort secondary education expanded considerably. At the conflict case studies end of the 1st plan the number of all types of secondary schools was 32,568 with 8,26,509 students and the number increased to 66,920 with 1,81,22,356 students by the end of 2nd plan. One of the essay major aims of the 3rd plan was to expand and intensify the educational effort and to fight marxism essays, bring every home within its fold so that in all branches of national life, education becomes the focal point of the secret essay, planned development.

Education programmes embodied in the 3rd plan were comprehensive in scope. The programme for 3 types 5 paragraph, the reorganization and improvement of secondary education, which had been implemented during 2nd plan period was continued. It was designed both to enlarge the content of secondary education and to make it a self contained unit within the educational process. During 3rd plan measures were taken for the secret, the conversion of high schools into higher secondary schools, development of multipurpose schools with provision of a number of elective subjects, expansion and improvement of facilities for the teaching of science, provision of educational and vocational guidance, improvement of the examination and evaluation system, enlargement of facilities for black term, vocational education, increased facilities for the education of girls and the backward classes and encouragement to merit through scholarships. The number of higher secondary schools increased from 3,121 to 6,203 and the number of secondary schools increased to 90 thousands with 300 lakhs students by the secret essay, the end of 3rd plan. During 3rd plan Indian Education Commission was appointed under the chairmanship of Dr.

D.S. Kothari, which is popularly known as Kothari Commission, 1964-66. The Commission aimed at an entire overhauling of the existing setup. Besides many other things it pleaded eloquently for fight, the improvement of secondary education and recommended that: (i) Enrolment in secondary education should be regulated during the next twenty years by proper planning of the location of secondary schools, maintaining adequate standards and to that end, by essay, determining the enrolment in terms of facilities available and fight club selecting the best student; (ii) A developmental plan for secondary education should be prepared for each district and implemented in a period of ten years, (iii) The best students should be selected for admission into secondary schools, through a process of self selection at essay the lower secondary stage, and on the basis of external examination results and school records at the higher secondary stage; (iv) Secondary education should be vocationalised in a large measure and enrolments in vocational courses raised to club, 20 per cent of total enrolment at the lower secondary stage and 50 per cent of total enrolment at the higher secondary stage by 1986. (v) A variety of part-time and full-time facilities in the secret essay, vocational education should be available at both these stages to meet the needs of the boys and girls, in urban and rural areas. Special sections should be set up in the education department to help young pupils who drop out after class VIII or VII to obtain training on a full time or part time basis, and to black profiling term, be in overall charge of the organisation of these courses; (vi) The central government should provide special grants to state governments in centrally sponsored sector for the vocationalisation of secondary education; (vii) Facilities for part-time education should be provided on a large scale at the lower and higher secondary stages in essay, general and vocational courses. Special emphasis will have to be placed on agricultural courses or those who have taken to farming as a vocation and on courses in home science or household industries for girls; (viii) Efforts should be made to accelerate the expansion of girls education so that the proportion of girls to boys reaches 1 : 2 at the lower secondary stage and 1:3 at the higher secondary stage in 20 years ; (ix) Emphasis should be placed on envelope establishing separate schools for girls, provision of hostels and scholarships and part-time vocational courses; (x) a national policy for the location of essay, new institutions for each category should be adopted so as to avoid waste and duplication; (xi) Vocational schools should be located near the industry concerned; (xii) In non-vocational schools, a common curriculum of general education should be provided for the first ten years of school education and diversification of studies and specialization should begin only at essay conclusion paragraph the higher secondary stage; (xiii) At the higher secondary stage courses will be diversified in such a manner as to enable pupils to the secret, study a group of envelope, any three subjects in depth with considerable freedom and elasticity in the grouping of subjects. In order to ensure the balanced development of the the secret adolescents, total personality the curriculum at this stage should provide half the time to the languages and one-fourth to physical education, arts and fight club marxism crafts, moral and spiritual education. After the recommendations of the secret essay, Kothari Commission, following measures were taken during 4th plan for the qualitative improvement of secondary education.

(i) Enrichment of the content of secondary education by adding one more class to 3 types, the high school and making it higher secondary course of 11 year duration. (ii) Implementation of essay, a long range programme of essay paragraph, examination reform aiming at a closer integration of educational objectives, learning process and methods of evaluation. (iii) Conversion of high schools into higher secondary and multi-purpose schools. Besides, improvement of science education, implementation of the the secret pilot projects for the introduction of work experience and vocationalisation, development of school complex etc. were some of the measures undertaken during 4th plan period. As a result of the different measures, the number of schools at the secondary level increased considerably.

By the year 1973-74, 74.40% boys and 29.60% girls were reading at the secondary stage. Different states accepted the new-pattern of education and introduced this system according to their own convenience. International Conflict Case! Though there is the secret essay a lot of confusion and envelope for resume feeling of the secret, anxiety in the minds of the resume cv guide people regarding the practical application of the new pattern, yet in the overall interest of the student population and for national integration there is great need of a uniform pattern of education. So steps were taken to accelerate the pace of progress in implementing the new scheme. It was not only for the sake of uniformity that the new structural pattern was introduced, but it was meant to provide definite stages for pupils to branch off from the academic streams. If provision would not be made for students to branch off to the secret essay, vocational courses after completion of the particular stage of education, the change of pattern would only partially achieve the objectives and students who would do better in vocational courses would tend to go in for general education.

During 5th plan, the objective in this sector was consolidated and controlled expansion. In order to raise the standard of education reorganisation of the club curriculum, improvement of the methods of teaching, reforms in the system of examination, development of instructional materials and text books were undertaken during 5th plan period. Even then the achievement in this sector was not encouraging. So there were concerted efforts to achieve predetermined targets and objectives within the stipulated period. In the 6th plan, for the success of the new education policy of 10+2+3 necessary changes were made in the curriculum at the school stage in order to relieve the burden on the child and make it realistic. It was expected that enrolment in secondary schools during the plan would be about 30 lakhs.

It had been proposed to essay, achieve this objective by better and efficient utilisation of present secondary schools instead of for resume, opening new ones. However, the target would be fulfilled only through hard and sustained work, original and creative thinking, devotion and the secret essay involvement of personnel associated with the planning and implementation of the new-pattern of education. The country had formally adopted a uniform pattern of education viz, the 10+2+3 pattern, consisting of 10 year school education followed by a two years higher-secondary or equivalent and !a three year degree course. Yet there was no uniformity in the number of years one spent in the three stages of school education; primary, upper-primary and secondary. However, classes VI to VIII were taken as components of the upper-primary stage. When the fight club marxism essays first and second All India Educational Surveys were conducted in the years 1957 and 1965, respectively, a distance of three miles or approximately 5 kilometers was considered to the secret essay, be a convenient walking distance for resume cv guide, children in classes VI to VIII.

Gradually, the distance limit was brought down to three kilometers. Besides, the pattern of upper primary schools prevailing in respective states and union territories varies. The Secret! Therefore, the facilities for higher-primary education were available in different types of schools. Some secondary and resume cv guide higher-secondary schools also had upper-primary classes attached to them. The Secret Essay! Unlike primary schools, the upper- primary schools were also managed by the government, local bodies, private bodies etc.

As the government had been giving a major thrust to the expansion of education in rural areas, private managements had been playing a dominant role in international conflict, urban areas. However, the overall annual increase in enrolment at the upper primary stage between the the secret third and example conclusion paragraph fourth survey was found to be 5.75 percent while that of between the fourth and the secret essay fifth survey was 6.8 percent. An encouraging feature was that the fight club rate of increase in enrolment had been more in rural areas than in urban areas. The period between the first and the second survey witnessed a sharp increase in the percentage of habitations which had access to secondary stage education either within the habitation or up to the secret, a distance of eight kilometers (five miles). But it was reduced to five kilometers by the time of the third survey. The fourth survey (1978) revealed that 72.54% habitations were served by secondary education within eight kilometers, which was increased to 78.92% by the fifth survey. In fact, it revealed that the facilities of secondary education had been extended to a larger number of habitations covering a higher proportion of 3 types 5 paragraph essays, rural population.

As such, there were 52,560 secondary schools in India by 1986. Of these, 38,862 were located in rural acres and the remaining 13,698 in urban areas. The Secret Essay! At the time of 1978 (fourth survey) the number of driving paper profiling while, secondary schools was 36,675. It may be mentioned that the the secret increase in the number of secondary schools during the black driving paper profiling racial period between 1973 and 1978 was only 3.5%. The sixth five year plan envisaged for the extended educational facilities in rural and backward areas specially for weaker section of the community in the field of secondary and higher secondary education. During this plan period greater facilities for secondary education had to provide due to essay, the expansion of the base of education at the elementary stage. Since secondary education is considered as the means of social mobility and economic independence, particularly among the socially disadvantaged. Besides, the plan emphasized the importance of paying special attention to the quality of education at this stage and to improve the internal efficiency of the system and enhancing the employability of its products. Heathen, there was great need for essays, more sustained and planned effort for the qualitative improvement of the secret essay, education at this level. Gradually the demand for secondary education had been growing. The expansion of educational institution at the ground level provided a further impetus to this growth.

For instance the number of upper-primary schools had increased from 1.35 lakhs to 1.46 laks from 1985-86 to 1990-91, respectively. Therefore, during seventh plan provision was made for promoting distance learning techniques and envelope open school systems. As a result, unplanned growth of the secret, high and higher secondary school was checked. Norms for the establishment of secondary school were evolved and strictly observed in resume cv guide, order to avoid proliferation of economically nonviable and educationally inefficient institutions. In expanding the facilities, special attention was paid to the needs of backward areas of under privileged sections of the community. The teaching of science and mathematics at high and higher secondary stage was strengthened and made universal. Moreover, efforts were made to update and modernize science curricula, improvement of laboratories and the secret essay libraries in schools and example of persuasive paragraph ensure the quality of science teachers through large-scale in service training programmes.

In-fact, the progressive outlook of the authority is clearly evident from the introduction of environmental education in the courses of study which formed an important aspect of science education during this plan period. As such, the the secret Socially Useful Productive Work (Work Experience) programme component constituted a link between work and education for the development of positive work ethics and work habits in learners. During sixth plan, a small beginning was made in providing computer literacy to students in selected secondary schools. Based on conflict case studies this experience, steps were taken to extend the essay programme to cover different aspects of computer appreciation and envelope application. The NPE, 1986 laid down that “access to secondary education will be widened to cover areas unserved by it at present.” As such, it recommended for the strengthening of the State Board of essay, Secondary Education, reorganization of teacher education along with in service training, examination reform, improvement and modification of the content of secondary education curriculum, strengthening of the open school system, provision of club marxism essays, extended educational facilities, special arrangement for talented children with pronounced competence etc. However, there had been a significance increase in the number of secondary schools. It increased from 54,845 in 1987-88 to 59,468 in 90-91 and the quality of education at this stage was enhanced. Because the key issues in secondary education, apart from access, were quality, modernisation and diversification. Though a considerable degree of uniformity had been achieved in regard to common education structure of 10+2+3, there was a considerable diversity regarding the location of the the secret +2 stage.

In quite a few states it was not a part of the school system. The secondary stage was divided in to two very distinct sub-stages- Secondary (up to class X) which was the stage of general education and higher secondary (class XI and XIl) which was marked by differentiation and diversification. For the national system of education the NPE envisaged a national curriculum frame work. The work of curriculum revision for the secondary stage was undertaken in almost all the states and the UTs in the light of the resume cv guide guide-lines prepared by NCERT. Further, necessary steps were taken by extending the access to secondary education by opening new schools in the un-served areas and by extending and consolidating the existing facilities with particular emphasis on ensuring substantially increased enrolment of the secret essay, girls and the scheduled castes and fight club marxism scheduled tribes. Besides, greater autonomy was given to the Board of Secondary Education of different states for strengthening their structure and composition. Quality improvement programmes were under taken relating to teacher- education by according statutory and autonomous status to NCTE, strengthening and upgrading the teacher-training colleges to Institute of Advanced studies (IASE) and College of Teacher Education. Moreover, pre-service and the secret essay in-service teacher training programmes were designed and open school system at this level was extended.

As time went on, the number of secondary schools increased enormously from 59,468 in 1990-91 to 90761 by 2002- 2003. The number of resume cv guide, teacher at essay teacher at this sage was 996054 and teacher pupil ratio was 1:30 by 2002-03.
